Special, From the Vaults

Some weeks there are just to many good comics to cover them all. Here's a group that missed out on being covered in their own week.

I covered The Dinosaur Whiteboard at the end of May 2015. Here's an interesting self referential version that explains not only the cartoon, but the original, of which it is a variation.

Although the original isn't quite as prone to the ellipsis at the end of frame 1.

Other notable entries:
  1. Don't forget that the mammals were also around at the time of the dinosaurs. Dinosaur Killer killed. [Buni]
  2. Nowhere near as old as the dinosaurs was the last posting to Twitter The Comment but before it vanished it contained this horrifying variation on the marriage ceremony.
  3. How parents start by thinking that their children will grow up to be world-shapers but really just want them to be nice people. [Lunababoon]
  4. Who develops those things advertised on the daily deal sites, and why? The team  attempt an answer. [rm -Rf /]
  5. How do you feel about the nouveau riche? [Funday Mornings]
  6. Political: Keep calling it a race issue because if they found out the truth ... [Truthdig]

Not the final frontier

What's the final frontier? Startrek thought it was space. Cousteau thought it was the sea. Others think it the spirit or soul

Not all of us were born evil

I've spend most of the day building history back from the start of my records in 2013 through to August 2014. I felt it would be a good idea to build some forward so this doesn't give the appearance of being an abandoned blog that's having a fitful resurrection.

I guess faking the history of a blog is one form of evil. Another is in this Diesel Sweeties. Unusually for my DS collection it isn't primarily about coffee, but some coffee links follow.

What would a robot be jealous about?

1. Thanks to Diesel Sweeties we now have an answer.  It may not be the answer, but it's an answer and for a webcomic dealing with robots and people who don't exist, it will do.

Free range centaurs

Studies have shown that free range farming of chickens is not necessarily stress free either, still it has to be better than the worst types of factory farming.

Danger unto injury or worse

Skiing is a dangerous sport, just ask Michael Schumacher, he was a motor racing driver but nearly died skiing. You are often only one slip from disaster. Formula 1 racing is safer,  I cycle, believe it or not cycling is safer. If I lived where it snowed I'd probably ski instead. Web Donuts is here to remind us of the risks, and the costs of being rescued.

Pressure test

When you fly, you always end up with something bad. Luckily for me the low pressure in the cabins always seems to disable my sense of smell. I guess others aren't so lucky.

The strongest drink

Homoeopathic Espresso? Careful not to dilute it any more or  really bad things may happen. [Irregular Webcomic]

I love science and hate bullshit so for me, at least, you can't get too  harsh on homoeopathy.

Doing Without

Today's number one is this entry from Breaking Fitt's Law. Unfortunately it was the second-to-last instalment of this webcomic before it quietly went on hiatis.

Number two comes from Diesel Sweeties. There's things we need and things we only think we need. Once you get past Oxygen, Water, and "Pizza" (Complex carbs, fats, a little protein and some vegetables) everything else is just a detail They, of course, understand something similar.

Seeing the New Year in

And when you're seeing the New Year in or doing any other count down you need to keep an eye on the time.

It only makes him want coffee

First thing in the morning I have some water. Ice cold and straight from the tap. When I smoked used to have a cigarette with it, after this I have my first coffee of the day. Don't try to make much sense out of me before that first cup of coffee.

Diesel Sweeties deals with a similar effect

Clothing care labels

The Doghouse informs us that clothing care labels are getting ever more complicated. Of course given that "fashion" now includes "Distressed (pre-torn) jeans" one really has to wonder.

Food and camping special

Another myth. Two guys sharing a bed must be head to foot (Strangely enough when I was a  child it was called "Head to Tail" which if you think about it is even weirder) failing which they will turn gay.

What is it about being gay that it is so easy to become? I've never noticed a strong desire to switch from fish to chestnuts. Are these all tales told by closeted gays who are in denial to explain their lapses?

Original on Amazing Super Powers.

Special food issue

I found I'd been saving a whole bunch of food related cartoons in this time period. I've bumped a few non food related ones to the next posting but this is basically as it happened in my twisted mind.

First up today we have a debut on bacon sandwiches from Callous Comics.  Callous occasionally makes me laugh out loud but more often just gives me a wry smile. I also tend to confuse it with both Donald Duck and with  the PhD comic. I don't follow Donald Duck and no anthropomorphic animals are in PhD so I don't understand why the confusion.

Driving in Lebanon

The start of March was a bit lean, but does include my first entry from  Sareen Akharjalian's ongoing strip Ink on the Side about middle class life in Lebanon. It's funny seeing how so many of her concerns are shared with "the West" while some are manifestly issues of her homeland.

Anyone who's ever used the Auckland Motorway system will appreciate this view of the Lebanese motorway system.

That first cup of coffee

I have to admit that I'm a great fan of coffee and not just for the caffeine. When I was a child and long before I drank coffee the grocery shops had large grinders where people selected the coffee they liked and then ground the beans. When I accompanied Mum to the grocers I loved standing by those machines and breathing the coffee aroma.

Wrong Hands gets the first place again on the last day of January 2014 for the caffeine causality loop.
